Repairing a clutch is rarely about "fixing" a part; it's almost always about replacement.
Digital Diagnosis: We check your hydraulic lines, master cylinder, and slave cylinder first.
Before tearing the car apart, a technician checks the clutch fluid levels and looks for leaks in the master and slave cylinders. If the hydraulics are fine, the problem is internal.
Accessing the Housing
To get to the clutch, the technician must remove the driveshaft (on RWD) or CV axles (on FWD) and drop the transmission. This is why labour costs are often higher than the parts themselves.
Full Clutch Kit Replacement
We don't just "patch" a clutch. Our standard practice is to replace the entire assembly as a unit. A standard kit includes:
Flywheel Precision
Every job includes a professional inspection (and resurfacing if needed) of the flywheel to ensure a perfect "bite."
The flywheel is the heavy metal disc attached to the engine. If it's scored or heat-cracked, it must be resurfaced (machined) or replaced to ensure the new clutch disc has a perfectly flat surface to grab onto.
Road Test: We don't hand back the keys until we’ve personally verified the gear transition is buttery smooth.

Clutch wear is often gradual, but these red flags are your car's way of asking for help before a total failure occurs.
Slipping: Does your engine race while your speed stays the same? That’s power lost.
This is the most common sign. You’ll notice the engine RPMs increase when you step on the gas, but the vehicle doesn’t accelerate accordingly. It feels like the power isn't reaching the wheels.
Shuddering or Vibration: Feeling a vibration when pulling away? A shuddering sensation when you release the pedal, is often caused by a warped pressure plate or oil contamination on the friction disk.
Hard Shifting: Grinding gears or difficulty engaging gears (especially first or reverse) often points to a hydraulic issue or a clutch that isn't fully disengaging.
"Burning Toast" Smell: A distinct, acrid burning odour means your friction plates are overheating due to excessive slipping.
Changed Pedal Feel: If the pedal feels "spongy," vibrates, or sticks to the floor, your hydraulics are failing. You likely have air in the hydraulic line or a failing slave cylinder.
Clutches wear out and will eventually need to be replaced. How quickly depends on factors unique to you: your driving habits, type of vehicle and when and where you drive.

Avoid "riding the clutch" (keeping your foot lightly on the pedal while driving).
This keeps the throw-out bearing in constant contact and generates heat that kills clutches prematurely.
Don't wait for the breakdown. Repairing your clutch at the first sign of trouble isn't just about convenience—it’s about your wallet:
Common Questions about Clutches
There is no single "clutch expiration date", as it depends heavily on driving habits. On average, a clutch lasts between 100,000 and 160,000 kilometres. However, frequent city driving or "riding the clutch" can wear it out in as little as 50,000 kms. While lots of highway driving can see a clutch last over 250,000 kms.
Technically yes, but we strongly advise against it. Accessing the clutch is labour-intensive (requiring transmission removal). If you only replace the disc and the pressure plate fails a month later, you’ll pay the same high labour cost all over again. A full Clutch Kit replacement ensures all components wear at the same rate.
That acrid, "burnt toast" smell is the friction material on the clutch disc overheating. This happens when the clutch is slipping (not fully engaging), often caused by heavy traffic, steep hills, or a worn-out pressure plate.
Slipping occurs when the clutch disc fails to grip the flywheel firmly.
You’ll notice the engine RPMs go up when you accelerate, but your vehicle’s speed doesn't increase at the same rate. It’s a clear sign that the friction material is gone.
It is not recommended. A slipping clutch can fail completely without warning, leaving you unable to move the vehicle. Additionally, the excessive heat from slipping can warp your flywheel, turning a standard repair into a much more expensive one.
A spongy or soft pedal usually indicates an issue with the hydraulic system (the master or slave cylinder) rather than the clutch disc itself. It often means there is air in the lines or a fluid leak. We can often fix this with a system bleed or cylinder replacement.
For most front-wheel or rear-wheel drive vehicles, the job takes between 4 to 8 hours. We typically ask for the vehicle for one full day to ensure the flywheel is properly resurfaced and the new system is fully road-tested.
"Affordable Auto Services saved me from a full transmission replacement. They caught my clutch issue early, resurfaced the flywheel, and had me back on the road quick as. Affordable and honest."
"These guys know their stuff!!! Took for a drive and instantly told me what was wrong and quoted what it would cost. Final cost was far less than quoted. Gave me a ride back to work and picked me up when it was ready.. Great team and 5 star customer service. Would definitely recommend."
