FAQ's

Common Questions about Warrant of Fitness and WOF Repairs

If your vehicle fails a WOF inspection you have 28 days to complete the repairs and return the vehicle for a re-check. After that, the inspection needs to be done again and you will need to pay for another WOF inspection.

You are not permitted to keep using the car during this 28 day period, other than to take it to a place of repair or to the WOF station for a re-check – and only it's safe to do so.

The 28 days do NOT allow a person to continue using the vehicle for a purpose other than for bringing the vehicle into compliance. Where a vehicle still has a current WOF/COF when it is failed, it must be brought up to compliance before it can again be operated for other purposes.

It's illegal to drive your car without a valid WOF, or a valid WOF sticker displayed. If you're caught using a vehicle without a current WOF, you will have to pay an infringement fee of $200, unless you're driving the vehicle (if it is safe to do so) to get it repaired, or to get a WOF inspection done.

Your vehicle must have a current warrant of fitness (WOF) or certificate of fitness (COF) before you can get a licence or use the vehicle on the road - unless your vehicle is exempt from continuous vehicle licensing or doesn't require a WOF or COF for road use (mopeds etc).

If you're not going to use your vehicle on the road for at least three months, you can apply for a temporary exemption from the requirement to continually license your vehicle (vehicle registration).

You can choose where to take your vehicle for repairs, however, if you take your vehicle back to the original WoF inspector, the WOF re-inspection will be free - so long as it's within 28 days of the initial inspection. Otherwise, you can choose to get a WOF re-inspection done elsewhere.

The vehicle must be safe to be operated. Therefore, if the engine management light is on or the vehicle is not fit for purpose then it will fail the WOF test.

It is not a legal requirement for a motor vehicle to have a spare wheel/tyre. However, if one is fitted, it must be securely attached by a device which is in good condition or stored in a closed compartment separate from the occupant space. This is checked at the time of a WOF inspection.
